well, can't you hear me selling rag and bone? bring out your junk and we'll give it a home. a broken trumpet or a telephone, a-come on, a-come on, a-come on, come on and give it to me, yeah... a-come on, a-come on, a-come on, come on and give it to me. rag and bone, rag and bone. a-come on, a-come on, a-come on, come on and give it to me. all of your pretty, your pretty little rags and bones.
In which Noam Chomsky
- illustrates that evidence of ‘the vicious cycle’ can been seen by walking New York City, where phenomenal wealth and serious poverty are side by side;
- describes the clear distinction between W Bush’s ‘system of justice’ for terrorists—kidnap, interrogate, torture— and Obama’s ‘system of justice’— ‘to just kill ‘em’;
- argues against the prevalent notion that the U.S. government has supported the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions/uprisings by highlighting the U.S. pattern of supporting dictators until the last minute;
- explains how the U.S. and Israel continue to be isolated within global diplomacy;
- and straight up says that ‘Europe is remarkably cowardly’ in the context of supporting Palestine.
Agreed, sir. Cheers.
Noam Chomsky is a hero of mine.

İ cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I’d lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don’t talk about revolution
That’s going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I’m glad the commies were thrown out
of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
as long as they don’t move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can’t understand how their minds work
What’s the matter don’t they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I read New republic and Nation
I’ve learned to take every view
You know, I’ve memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I’m almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There’s no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I’ll send all the money you ask for
But don’t ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I’ve grown older and wiser
And that’s why I’m turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
liberalism is compromised by capitalist greed and privileged cowardice. liberalism is slow death. and, in the words of card carrying communist bad ass Angela Davis, “radical simply means grasping things at the root.”
forgive me because i don’t have the class privilege to just go skipping out on my classes to be in solidarity with occupy wallstreet
i pity your inability to realize how inaccessible this movement is to people who can’t afford to walk away from their lives for the sake of solidarity
but sadly, there are tens of thousands of tragedy cases just like yourself who think you are making a difference
by not bathing, by having “punk” clothing, by listening to certain types of music and DIYing it up out the ying yang, but not actually critically engaging with ideas and how they affect somebody other than you
by doing things to “fuck the system”, getting away with it scott free simply because you are white and youthful and white youths “make mistakes” which can be overlooked later on in life. and when you decide that play acting at poverty and a loss of privilege is too difficult for you, you can just go back to your previous life before revolution swept you up by the heels.
quite honestly, i’m fed up with people like you.
i’m an upper middle class african american woman
i didn’t get into college with a full ride and a free toaster
i’m not going to miss class to stand in solitary with a movement and its people who refuse to understand that its not accessible to everyone who wants to participate, and the means of implementing accessiblity are usually hastily implemented to quelch criticism, and are a lot of times half assed.
and when i have a strong opinion on how its ridiculous as fuck to walk out on your 50,000 per year, private liberal arts education to stand in solidarity with Occupy Wallstreet, don’t cop a fucking attitude with me as if i don’t know what i’m talking about and i don’t understand the reasoning behind it.
i do understand the reasoning of meaningful solidarity, and sadly missing class doesn’t cut the mustard for me. it doesn’t fit my definition of meaningful solidarity.
sweetheart, i’ve seen people like you, you’re a dime a dozen and you don’t wind up changing the world in droves. instead you serve as a constant reminder as to how flawed current revolutionary movements are today, and how people need to check themselves before they get wrecked by reality.
so until you’re willing to get some critical analysis under your three row stud belt
sit down
shut up
and kiss my grits!
STANDING OVATION. I am shouting this shit from the rooftops in my inner circle and sadly I get as much defensiveness as anything. being oppressive isn’t fighting oppression. if you want a revolution, you’re not gonna get it focusing on protecting your privilege. if you can’t hear and respond to criticism without invoking your privilege, you are the LAST person who needs to be leading anything. people need more of a depth of reference than Forrest Gump to speak actual truth to power. real revolution is day in, day out, honest struggle and respect for and solidarity in the struggles for others. not some fucking “OH MAN I KNOW POLICE BRUTALITY” performance art piece you can reminisce about later with your other white liberal friends while you’re pulling mad cash promoting some fucked up, half measure, neoliberal cause in comfort. INTERSECTIONALITY MOTHERFUCKERS, GET YOU SOME.
somebody watched Wall Street one too many times. it’s not news to anyone that you’re vicious sociopaths who are happy to cannibalize anyone to get what you want, guys. it’s just that it’s not cute anymore. and you can threaten us through the market all you want, but there are more of us than you, and all that time with your personal trainer ain’t gonna stop a bullet. and unlike money, bullets aren’t just a symbol. real talk.
From San Jose Mercury News:
A man and a woman were hit at 11th Street and Broadway by a silver Mercedes, after a male driver ran a red light, said Joe Jackson, 37, of Oakland, who witnessed the incident.
The driver was irritated by protesters walking in front of him.
Onlookers said the driver deliberately ran over the pair, accelerating after a man hit on the hood of the car.
The windshield was splattered with what appeared to be a milkshake.
After the car stopped at the other end of the intersection, the driver switched seats with his female passenger.
About 40 people gathered in the intersection and some pulled open the driver’s door.
The woman inside shouted: “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”
The injured man and woman were taken away in ambulances.
Police let the driver go.

On Tuesday night Scott Olsen was attacked by Oakland police. A projectile hit the head of the Marine causing a skull fracture and swelling of the brain. He was taken to the hospital and was in the ICU unit, but is now in stable condition. A photo of Jay Gentile, a fellow Marine, has been creating a lot of buzz on the Internet. Gentile is holding a picture of the wounded Olsen and a sign that says “You did this to my brother.” Gentile speaks out about the attack on his fellow Marine.

But greed is a bottomless pit
And our freedom’s a joke
We’re just taking a piss
And the whole world must watch the sad comic display
If you’re still free start running away
Cause we’re coming for you!
Whoa. Chief Anthony Batts has resigned, according to an internal OPD memo obtained by Harry Harris at the Trib. Per the Trib’s report, Batts’ e-mail attributed his resignation — which will become effective sometime next month — to mounting pressure and “limited control but full accountability” in his job
I feel like this had to happen.

It’s Alright Ma (I’m only Bleeding) - Bob Dylan (LIVE@Newport Folk Festival 1965) (by jordandunnn95)
Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to
For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something they invest in
Thousands gathered in front of Oakland’s City Hall this evening in response to last night’s violent police invasion and destruction of Occupy Oakland’s camp.
Tonight, police have again used tear gas, flash grenades and rubber bullets to forcefully disperse the lawful assembly by Oaklanders. Some injuries have been reported. We will have more information as it becomes available.
At this time, this appears to be the most violent police attack on protestors since the Occupy movement began.
and in Chicago. and in Atlanta. and it goes on and I ache for some kind of justice in an increasingly unjust time and place.
Understand that though you may not have been harassed by police or immigration enforcement, many are every day. Understand that, though the one time you called the police, and it worked for you, for many it never does. Understand that though cops are always the good guys on TV and in movies, they almost never are in real life.
Understand that the police and laws are part of a system that is anti-poor, anti-women, anti-people of colour, anti-queer, and anti-people with disabilities. Understand that to truly be free, to truly do what you are trying to do, which is resisting the laws that allow some to be rich and powerful and for the rest to live at their mercy, you must resist racism, sexism, classism, homophobia and disableism. You must resist the very structure every one of these laws is based on — you must resist colonialism.
Understand that to truly be free, to truly include the entire 99 per cent, you have to say today, and say every day: We will leave no one behind. We will leave no one in jail. We will leave no one in the clutches of immigration enforcement. We will leave no one when they are strong. We will leave no one when they are weak. We will support the decisions people make, to do whatever they feel necessary to survive and to resist. We will support those that fight in the courts, and we will support those that fight in the streets.

in a lot of ways, the Occupy movement feels, to me, like middle class and otherwise privileged people finally beginning to understand that there is another experience out there and it isn’t pretty. welcome. now grab your privilege and get to work.
